SMARTPORT: a new Project meeting in Italy
Overview

On May, 30 2023 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the Municipality of Termoli - Project Partner of the "SMARTPORT" project - will organize an Institutional Meeting to promote and exploit the information derived from the project, which has reached its final stages.

SMARTPORT Project - "Smart and Sustainable Energy Port", financed by the Interreg IPA CBC Italy-Albania-Montenegro Programme 2014-2020, aims at improving the energy profile of South Adriatic and Ionian ports by introducing eco-sustainable LED lighting systems through pilot actions and adopting new and efficient energy strategies.

The main Project output is an intervention strategy for ports’ energy efficiency that combines a set of measures to formulate the existing processes and to focus further on actions to minimize energy usage including renewable energy sources, energy saving, energy storage, and smart grid technology, which are a key tool for managing energy from renewable sources and for effective reduction of CO2 emissions. The expected results are:

  • improved port area capacity in sustainable energy planning according to EU standards;
  • adoption of energy efficiency and sustainable energy production programs for public administrations;
  • reduction of the gap in know-how and increase in capacity to increase energy efficiency in port areas;
  • reduction of energy consumption and CO2 emissions in the selected port area. Thanks to the project "energy managers" will be trained enabling the durability and transferability of project results.

Port cities like Termoli represent a complex interaction of productive-occupational-environmental-social factors. In this context, the Port of Termoli, which in 2022 has been included in the Port Network Authority of the Southern Adriatic Sea, represents an important driver of social, economic, and employment development which, however, is necessary to manage according to the principles of the circular economy and to improve the energy environmental sustainability, in order to reduce the possible impacts on climate and environment and on the health of communities living in coastal areas.

The event - which aims to raise the awareness of public officials in particular, true proponents of policies and important and future strategies for environmental planning, savings, and energy efficiency in port areas - will be held at the Council Chamber of the Municipality of Termoli, in Via Sannitica 5. The meeting will be a\ended by experts who will illustrate good practices for the environmental sustainability of ports, together with representatives of the following partners: the Municipality of Termoli, the Port Network Authority of the Ionian Sea – Port of Taranto and ARPA Puglia.
